How to increase engine power?

We increase the working volume
The easiest way in many situations - the more the better. Therefore, many self-taught mechanics solve the issue of power by increasing the volume of the internal combustion engine. This can be done by rewinding the cylinders. When deciding on this procedure, it is worth considering several points: an increase in the diameter of the cylinders should be performed by a specialist; after boring the cylinder, it will be necessary to replace the pistons with rings. Engine displacement can also be increased by replacing the crankshaft with an analogue of greater amplitude. This method has several disadvantages. The altered torque can adversely affect the drive. The car will become more responsive when you press the accelerator pedal. However, the efficiency of the engine will be lower.
Increasing the compression ratio
Compression is the pressure that is created in the combustion chamber when the piston reaches its highest point. And the compression ratio is the ratio of the volume of the entire cylinder to the combustion chamber. The purpose of the procedure is to reduce the volume of the combustion chamber in the cylinders. Use a thinner cylinder head gasket. Replace flat bottom pistons with convex ones. This method has two advantages. First, the engine power is increased. Secondly, fuel consumption is reduced. However, this procedure also has a drawback. Since the amount of mixture in the combustion chamber has become less, it is worth considering switching to fuel with a slightly higher octane rating.
This method is only suitable for fuel injected vehicles. This option is not available for carburetors for the simple reason that gasoline is supplied using mechanical devices. And the injector is controlled by an electronic control unit. To perform this operation, you need: verified software; the ability to make settings; The program matches the characteristics of the engine. However, the car owner must remember: any change in the settings of the electronic control of engine systems can disable it. In some cases, even the consumption of gasoline is reduced. But at the same time, the power unit develops its resource faster.
Carburetor or throttle modification
Another way to improve engine efficiency is a throttle body upgrade or MD tuning. Its purpose is to "improve" the process of mixing gasoline and air.
To perform the work you will need:
- a drill or a screwdriver;
- drill (diameter 6 mm);
- fine sandpaper (grit 3000 and finer).
The task is to make small indentations (up to 5 millimeters deep) in the closed throttle area on the walls. What is special about this setup? When the damper opens, air doesn't just enter the chamber. The selected chamfers create a small vortex in the chamber. The enrichment of the fuel mixture is more efficient. This results in better combustion and an increase in the efficiency of the cylinder itself.
Not all power engines respond properly to this improvement. Some ECUs are equipped with an air sensor that regulates the fuel supply depending on the amount of fuel. In this case, you will not be able to "cheat" the system. However, in most cases, the upgrade results in a capacity increase of up to 25 percent.
